INSIDE ADIRE PATTERNS
Adire (pronounced Ah-Dee-Reh) is a textile resist dyeing technique in Nigeria. The outcome is beautifully patterned fabric, once worn as a form of communication and storytelling.
Every pattern has a name and story; often the stories were words of advice from the elders, and a form of documenting social, economic and environmental conditions.
Adire Patterns was founded by Aina Davies, a fifth generation textile artist. During her years of working with Nike Art Gallery, Aina discovered that her fellow Nigerians were unaware that the patterns hold meaning.
On a quest to keep the ancestral practice alive and raise awareness of the pattern meanings, she documented the Adire making process and pattern meanings and published 'Storytelling Through Adire' book.
